There are four types of DBS checks in operation, with each increasing in strength the more engagement with the public the role involves.<\/p>\n<p>As a civil engineer, your interaction with the public will be limited so you can expect to be asked to take a basic DBS check.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is a basic DBS check?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A basic DBS check for a civil engineer involves a search by the Disclosure and Barring Service to see whether you have any unspent <a href=\"https:\/\/crbdirect.org.uk\/criminal-convictions-and-dbs-checks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">criminal convictions<\/a> or conditional cautions.<\/p>\n<p>If any information is found, it will be displayed on the DBS certificate. A certificate with all fields left blank will be issued if no records are uncovered.<\/p>\n<p>DBS checks for civil engineers came into effect in 1974 with the introduction of the 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. The act details the requirements for an extensive number of roles where a level of interaction with the public is necessary.<\/p>\n<p>A basic check for a civil engineer is a first <a href=\"https:\/\/crbdirect.org.uk\/levels-of-dbs-check\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tier<\/a> background check and will not involve a search for spent convictions.
