Basic DBS checks are a formal check for any criminal records carried out by the Disclosure and Barring Service.<\/p>\n<p>The Disclosure and Barring Service are a public body sponsored by the Home Office. The DBS has a mandate to keep the public, particularly children and <a href=\"https:\/\/crbdirect.org.uk\/defining-a-vulnerable-adult\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vulnerable adults<\/a>, safe. The Disclosure and Barring Service carry out statutory searches for a vast variety of roles which involve a level of engagement with the public.<\/p>\n<p>Those who come into close contact with children or vulnerable adults are subject to the most comprehensive checks.<\/p>\n<p>As an engineering designer you will not fall into the high risk category because you won\u2019t have unsupervised or close contact with the public therefore a DBS check for an engineering designer is a basic DBS check.<\/p>\n<p>Your basic DBS check will involve a statutory search to see if you have any <a href=\"https:\/\/crbdirect.org.uk\/dbs-check-faq-videos\/what-does-unspent-mean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unspent<\/a> criminal convictions or conditional cautions. This is a first <a href=\"https:\/\/crbdirect.org.uk\/levels-of-dbs-check\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tier<\/a> check so it won\u2019t involve any spent convictions.<\/p>\n<p>Spent convictions are former convictions where the rehabilitation period for the sentence has been completed so the conviction is now \u201cspent\u201d.
